La Educación Prohibida - Nuevo Avance 2

  1. I strongly agree with Helen Flix about labels. I read about the Pygmalion Effect for one of my examinations, and I believe that a good teacher cannot fail to understand the power of his/her expectations. Labels seem to do no harm, and they even seem to be very useful in predicting the performance of our students, but more often than not they only lead us to condemn our not-so-seemingly-talented students to failure right from the start. Think of this: if you think one of your students is a hopeless case, would you waste your time teaching them? We may not notice but, according to some research conducted some years ago, we tend to behave differently towards students for whom we have more favourable expectations, and neglect the others. It is not surprising, then, to see that our expectations have been fulfilled at the end of the year (or even sooner). This makes me think that maybe teachers are not so good at predicting things as they are at making things happen.

  2. Hello! I´ve seen the two videos and read every comments, of course.

First of all, I think that one of the most importance and invaluable changes we’re facing is the fact that we ALL feel that a change is needed. It’s seems redundant, but is not. Being opened to a change is the first and most important step to make a REAL change.

I agree with my partners that WE are the one who can transform this wish into facts. The first step, I think, it’s been done. We all want a change. Now, I believe that it’s time for being critical and proposing ways to “materialize” these concepts.

Personally, I feel that "conceptual" discussion is taking so much time. What we really need is FACTS. I think we have a curriculum which allows us to do something for Education. Yet I see that "resistance" by the part of some educators is, in a way, "blocking" the way. In any case, I know and recognize the importance of discussion and negotiation. And, after all, that is what education should be about: not "selling" knowledge, but constructing it together (students and teachers).

I liked both videos and the project that is being done to make all the possible voices heard.

If new Ideas come to my mind, I´ll write again. I hope my English was good. But I think that the purpose here is communication, Isn’t it? hahaha

  3. In my opinion, it is hard to change an educational system which is not only strongly linked to, but also the product of, a specific mode of production (i.e. the capitalist system). Within this context, the school inevitably operates as a tool for reproducing social relationships, thus maintaining social inequality. We cannot deny that this situation is both known and desirable for those who hold power, so having a different point of view on the matter means having a critical position of the system as a whole. I believe that the (or at least mine) main concern is to decide whether the society we live in must change first to be able to change the school, or the other way about. I am inclined to thinking that the school can really be a soil in which we teachers sow the seed of counter-hegemonic values. After all, children are the builders of the future.

  4. I think Evangelina has a very realistic point of view. What she says is almost true. But I would like to add something to her words. We, as teachers, ARE part of the society so the will for a change should be present in our classrooms. Of course Evangelina, I understand that you refer to a question of powers but you know, I'm 45 years and I'm still a believer. As you have said in your previous comment, “There should be many revolutions going on in as many classes as possible, so that the change becomes real.”¿Don't you think that in that sense WE have power?

  5. Hi everyone!
I’ve watched both videos and I found them very interesting as well as the comments everyone has made. First of all I’d like to remark that it is not that our educational system nowadays has got no values, but the wrong ones (those highlighted by the Traditional school). Taking this into account what we, as teachers, should do is to start changing our attitude towards students, respecting them for what they are.
I completely agree with Cristian about the labeling of students, we are not aware of how we affect their performance by doing this. Worst of all, we are proving that we don’t know anything about our students, and we don’t even make an effort to get to know them.

  6. I remember one of my maths teachers saying "this girl usually does silly mistakes. It´s normal"( the way I had solved an equation on the board)
I wasn´t able to pass maths until a substitute teacher believed in me.
We must be careful when we talk to our students, derogatory comments can compromise their "academic" performance and affect negatively their self-steem.

  7. We should revise our own educational biographies in order that change begins within ourselves as the video proposes. I attended school during the military dictatorship, from 1973 to 1984. Strict authority was a feature that was present in every class, and there was no way of studying other than behaviorism. I wouldn't like my students to go through the same I did. Perhaps thinking about how we learnt should be a first step not to repeat negative experiences and to look for an alternative to traditional education.

  8. I firmly believe that a change of paradigm is vital to transform our educational system. I think that is our responsibility to produce this change, so we can start in the classroom by being more understanding, flexible, considerate, and affectionate towards our students. I am sure that a change of mind will produce a revolution in the school system.

  9. According to the video, in my opinion i strongly believe that education is old structured. If we want to make education more flexible we, as teachers, need to produce that change. We have to be open-minded and try to focus the student as a human being, not only as a student, we need to understand our students and be open to their problems and weaknesses. I do believe that students need a partner not a kind of "bossy teacher".

  10. I totally agree with this thing of labeling students. I think that most of us have been affected by this in some way. Teachers like to predict what their students are going to do or maybe what they are able to. So they are all the time expecting students to get the same results and it can´t do any good.
As regards to the fact that a change is needed, I think that this "change" is already starting and we all are part of it. It is a very long process that never ends because society is constantly changing. So education can´t be static. I also think that we, as teachers, must adapt to this constant change and try to do our best in the classroom using our own experience as students. Being part of a project like "forbidden education" would be a very good way to participate and contribute with this change.

  11. I agree with the video which says that if we want to change the world, we should start changing the educational system. According to this, the first step could be, as Naty Bilbao says, to change our attitude towards students. We have to believe in them and give them the possibility to express themselves. I know it is hard and difficult work and it might take a long time but it is worth trying.

    1. I think a change in our educational system is necessary not to continue discriminating or having prejudices about people because of their social background. we as future teachers must adapt to the change we are experiencing, little by little. do not have to stick with the easier way but try to be flexible and accompany students on this path. especially those young people who are excluded and who think they can have a better future. we must give them courage and values that can not be lost to continue the chain and try not to break.

    2. I agree! If we, students at a Teacher Training Collage, do not believe that education can (and will)change society and its current problems, then we should consider the possibility that perhaps this is not the course of studies we should be taking.

  12. I agree with the video and I like that there are people who want a change in education.I think that teachers should love their role in education and that it would be a begining to start the changes because with love and dedication we can reach the objective of getting a better education and way of education. As Miguel V said, we need facts and I also agree with Marisel S on that little by little we'll do it....because now,as Naty B said, the education system has wrong values but we have to try to change it because we are the new teachers generation.I suffer the same as Viviana R with bad and horrible kind of teachers when I was a child....they were indescribable people.
I'm happy because I'm part of this new change.....and when I teach, I do it with all the love and dedication and I proud of that!

  13. I agree with the video and every comment my partners have done. I think the educational system and the complete society are constantly changing and we, as teacher, must adapt to it. We cannot continue teaching as teachers used to do it many years ago. I believe we have to help students to understand things and teach them values that they should not lose. As Nora said, referring to students, 'We have to believe in them and give them the possibility to express themselves', I am very sure that there is where changes begin. We can make things in different ways, taking our experiences as students and thinking of what is what we do not want for our students future. There are lots of tools we can use and we do not have to lose our time. So, let's get to work because they are the builders of the future.

  14. I agree with the ideas shared by all the teachers in the video. They want us to demonstrate that there is a need to make changes in the educational system as every thing is changing in the world and we have to adapt to these changes. We, as teachers, must be conscious and star doing new things¡

  15. From my point of view, our educational system is closely related to what Freire calls "banking education". Some teachers see the students as if they were empty depositories, whose role is just to receive information, memorize it and repeat it.
In my opinion, the first step is to recognize that students are not "empty heads waiting to be filled with information" and that a good teacher is not the one who knows perfectly well all the contents. Quality teaching is not only the transformation of content, but also the acknowledgement and understanding of students' beliefs and opinions.

  16. Well, both videos are very interesting. I like them very much. I strongly agree with their ideas and the comments everybody has made. Times have changed and education system has to adapt to this change. This change requires not only changing our teaching techniques but also changing our mind, our attitudes towards students. We need that everybody forms part of it.

  17. I strongly believe that the education imparted in our country has to change. Although we see ourselves (teachers) like small ants when faced with our educational system and its rules, laws or whatever it tries to impose, we are MANY and we can do a small difference from our places. We cannot dream of a perfect education taking place all the time and everywhere but, at least, we can do our best in our classrooms and with our students. We don't change the world with this but we WILL change a student's life for good.

    1. I think we can change our educational system if we really want that to happen. As the videos very well suggest , a new educative paradigm is necessary because the humanity and the world are changing, so the education has to adapt to that changes. We, as teachers, have to look for new methods and new procedures to be able to give answers to all the problems that education has.The educative system is wrongly proposed and, consequently, it fails.

It´s important for me to say that students don´t feel comfortable in the classroom and we have to change that..How do we do that? well, first of all giving meaning to what we teach, and not to punish the students when they make mistakes because we are all human beings and we all make mistakes during our lives.

We have to be very conscious that this change in the education is the teacher´s responsibility so this will occur if we really want a real change.

  18. I think that the world has moved forward from bicycle to aeroplane, telephone to mobile phone and letters to e-mails, so there is an urgent need to revamp our education. This shows that our education system should reform the way of educating their student for instance following analogy coaching, smart classes were the students can analyze and students can think in a realistic way.

  19. Hello!I've been thinking of the videos and your comments, and I realized that we are part of a huge process!
We,as students and as future teachers are part of the construction of a new education, and this means a change of conscience, a change from the inside...
As Sebastian have said, teachers have to adapt to changes, and I know that adapting leads responsabilitie and sacrifice... But I really think we won`t regret...
"(...)different human beings for a different world." says a teacher in the video, and that's the matter, we have o move foward and teach from a different point of view.
We are that change people!Belive it or not, we are making history...
This proyect is very interesting and I so glad to see how everyone have take the idea with such enthusiasm!
This transition is so important and really worth one's while...
When I start studying in this course of study I get involved in this change and I so HAPPY!!I find people passionated for education, people who want to have a better world ...

  20. Many world problems have their roots in the lack of education. In my opinion, being at school doesn't mean that we're learning! Apart from the contents, we should focus on values, respect for the others, and so on. I want to be a teacher because I believe in changes, and I know there are many things to improve in matters of education. Discrimination, inequality, poverty, racial prejudice, millions of out-of-work people are part of our social reality and we have to struggle against them. I know I won't be an all-powerful teacher but If every teacher does his/her bit, we'll surely trigger many successful changes for the future.

  21. I think that, as Evangelina has said, it is very difficult for anyone to change a system that is directly linked to a stronger economic and political one. However, I think that it is inside this educational system that we can make some changes. I could not sit doing nothing, knowing that this is an exclusionary system. If there is an hegemony, there must be a counter-hegemony I want to be part of!!!
